Our final stop on October 11 was the Hakkasan Hokoji Temple. It was beautiful there, quiet and peaceful.
Some of the statues on the grounds.
And a big bonsai tree.
The temple where you can (though we didn't) participate in Zen meditation-called Zazen and even listen to a Buddhist sermon by a temple master (if you understand Japanese, I'm sure it would be neat!). I've read that the temple is 700 years old!
I love how people, no matter what their belief system, take such pride in creating intricate works of art for their worship houses.
This is said to be the largest three story pagoda in Japan.
The pagoda is pretty newly built, but its newness doesn't make it any less stunning.
I wish I had more information to share about some of the places we visit, but its hard to find good info in English.
There are also many shrines on the grounds. I find it so beautiful that the Shinto and Buddhist faiths complement each other so nicely that they have Shinto shrines on the same grounds as a Buddhist temple. The red Torii gates mark the entrance to a Shinto shrine and symbolically mark the transition from profane to sacred.
There were some huge granite slab tables and seats outside the temple. We took a little rest here while the older kids finished exploring.
I'd say we made good use of our time off from school and work! We made some good memories and saw some amazing things!
